La Cachette is a place to hide your secrets, and this delightful and versatile house in one of Marseillan's oldest streets has a very special secret of its own - it may become two independent apartnments, to be rented seperately or together.

Ideal for groups of friends or family travelling together, this house may allow each generation the freedom to enjoy its own lifestyle - one holiday home for the night owls, another for the early bird!

Perhaps the upstairs apartment La Terrasse, where a late night diner in the port or an evening dancing by the plage may be rounded off with a digestif served under the stars of a Languedoc night to the fragrance of the Mediterranean sea air and the echo of the church bell chime on the breeze.

Maybe Le Salon apartment would be your choice, a short walk to Eugene's artisanal bakery on
the corner for freshest crusty loaves, a different style each day of the week, to enjoy in the first floor breakfast room.

Whether you stay in one of the twin apartments or enjoy the run of the entire house, La Cachette is an ideal home for exploring the charms of the oldest village in France and the pretty port with its quayside tables.

The house is tucked away, just behind the market place, in the rue Achille Baille, once home to the noble ruling families of the town, and just across the way from the site of the original Chateau of Marseillan.
In a street where princes and playwrights once walked, where the king of France even built a staircase and seigneurs commissioned a secret passage to the church for sanctuary in the age of the Terror and the Revolution and where penitent friars would rub shoulders with wealthy merchants, now all is peaceful and calm and the modest housefronts show no sign of the infinite variety of so many lives lived along its twisting meandering path.

Only the colourful mural on a garden wall a few doors along from La Cachette, with its scenes of the lagoon in its greco-roman heyday remains to hint at a quarter that has inspired storytellers and romantics alike for generations.
Open the simple front door to the delightfully tiled hallway of La Cachette and climb the stairs to discover the house for yourself.

A second front door on the first floor opens from the staircase into the hallway of what may be selected as the three bedroom Le Salon apartment.
Pass a double bedroom, shower room and wc and a twin bedroom (with bunk beds), then enter the well equipped kitchen (with fitted cooker, fridge and microwave) and morning room with its dining table and tall windows looking out over the street across a juliette balcony railing.

From here, walk through to the seperate living room. Many original features including the mantelpiece over the fireplace and the traditional tiled floor. A comfy sofa and a pair of armchairs by another sunny south-facing window make this a charming den for a quiet evening chatting over a glass of local Merlot or just watching TV to unwind after a day at the beach.
From the living room, discover the master bedroom suite with its private shower room and wc.

Up the old staircase to the second floor, and a bright two-bedroom roof-terrace apartment.
The master double bedroom also has an ensuite shower and wc.

The second double bedroom (under the eaves) has original beams across the ceiling and a window looking out onto the terrace.

The main living and dining room, with an L shaped sofa (which converts to become an extra bed for overnight guests) is open plan to the kitchen - well equipped with oven, hob, microwave and fridge).

Original stone walls and roof beams are a feature of this family room with its glass wall leading out to the terrace (taller guests should remember to duck as they step across the threshold).
The loft conversion into an outdoors dining area has an abris shelter so that you may enjoy life al fresco even in the midday sunshine.
A marble-topped table for enjoying memorable meals at sunset, comfy chairs for simply lazing outside underthe mediterranean sun.

Whether you enjoy the luxury of the whole house, or opt to stay in one of the two apartments, the ground flooor laundry room, with washing machine and drying space also has space for storing your bicycles should you decide to follow the Tour de France in July or take a cycle path around the lagoon or along the Canal du Midi any time of year.
The house has international TV channels and wifi internet connection.
So many shops within a couple of minutes walk: several bakeries, a butchers and grocers.

Local fishermen and winemakers sell their wares just around the cornerand yoiu are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants.

Just yards from the end of the street find hearty family fare at Le Boulevard and tyue foodie gastronomy at La Table d'Emile. And so many more tables to discover down by the waterfront.

Enjoy Marseillan...

and further afield...

Whilst you may be happy to stay snuggled up in these lovely bedrooms, Marseillan offers plenty of excuses for enjoying the great outdoors. Consider sailing and water-sports on the lagoon, just 5 minutes on foot from the house. And the Kit'hau wake park watersports centre in the Parc Tabarka is next to the skate park.

Tennis courts by the lakeside. The beach is only a 5 minute drive away. And there, find jet skis and diving classes.

Head further along the coast and Cap d'Agde brings myriad sporting treats from pedalos to the excellent Golf Club. And there are Casinos at Agde and Sete for the gaming tables.

The house itself is a few minutes walk from the village theatre with its programme of music and drama, and the arts hub of Pezenas is 20 minutes by car from Marseillan.

In summer, wander down to the port for jousting, the Lou Capelet race up a ship’s mast and dancing at a summer ball. In November, the autumn regattas attract several hundred young sailors to the water as the under 12's compete for the optimist challenge.
