Who said you can’t have everything: In the narrow winding streets of old Marseillan, discover a 3 or 4 bedroom traditional village house … with a difference.

Our special treasure for summer has a secret garden behind the high stone walls.

Not only this, but a suntrap terrace on the first floor. And if you decide to bring or hire bikes, then store them in the garage downstairs.

But it is the garden, that special secret, that makes a stay in the rue Vedel so different.
Away from prying eyes, in a warren of centuries-old streets and alleys, where monks and pilgrims once crossed the paths of merchants and mariners between the rue de l'Hopital and rue de la Danse, here is open space, yet private, where families can while away a summer afternoon and couples may toast the stars in the summer sky above.
Bienvenue au Jardin Secret , a private square in the historic centre of Marseillan where you may be alone in the bustling heart of the oldest village in France.

And now - in its 8th summer welcoming guests to Marseillan, the house is bigger than ever, with a second garden kitchen and living room at the garden level - and the option of an extra studio bedroom looking for a modest supplement

Freshly modernised and redecorated, this garden hideaway is ideal for larger families or groups of friends, as extra hidden beds  mean that up to 9 can sleep here if friends come to stay.

The rue Vedel runs from the town hall to the site of the historic hospital, and has always been at the very heart of Marseillan life.

This part of the village dates back to the Hundred Years War between England and France, when the first ramparts were built to defend the villagers against the army of Edward the Black Prince.

Today’s visitors will find themselves far more welcome. Let yourself in and climb the traditional turning staircase to the main living room on the first floor.
Bigger than some holiday homes, with over 400 square feet of bright and airy indulgence. Large windows at both ends of the room bathe the space in natural light all day long.

This also brings you the refreshing bonus of wonderful through breezes in summertime, which you may swap for an air-conditioning unit, should you prefer!

Forget the unpacking and just flop down on the luxurious leather bean-bag style sofa, big enough for the whole family to snuggle up in front of the 32inch screen TV and DVD. And with the remote in your hand, you may culture hop between French and English language TV channels.
With your laptop, tablet or smartphone, you may keep in touch with the outside world, thanks to new wifi connection. Plenty of space for a carefully stored folding bed.

As well as the smart contemporary dining suite for eight, a breakfast bar and three stalls perch by the open plan kitchen with its large family-sized fridge, dishwasher, gas hob, electric oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, and everything you need to prepare memorable meals to savour when you come home from the market.

Step out onto a sun-trap south-facing terrace for your aperitif, a glass or two of Marseillan’s chilled Terret wine, with those deliciously addictive picholine olives from the nearby groves of Clermont l'Herault helps work up an appetite. An electric awning keeps the noonday sun at bay, but in the evening, the gentler setting sun paints the terrace walls with a honeyed glow.

You may prefer to eat downstairs in the garden, where an old abris shelter on the patio area against the tall stone walls offers afternoon shade, and there is a barbecue for grilling those fresh sardines and seabass bought direct from the fisherwomen’s counters next to the village church.

A glass table seats 6-8 comfortably.

You do not even have to carry plates and pots down the winding staircase, as there is now a brand new fully fitted kitchen at garden level.

An open-plan living room here means that you may indulge in a sofa flop indoors, when the sun gets too hot - and a small staircase leads to the mezzanine studio bedroom, a spacious hideaway for a couple available to rent for a modest supplement.

With the garden-level shower room and wc close by, this means that the new rez du jardin studio space offers a real bonus for large families.

Perhaps a granny annexe or space for the youngsters - you choose

Since you can never have too many bathrooms when the whole family is on holiday there is a wc at every one of the three levels of the house.

On the top floor, lovely old-style wooden doors contrast with the cool whitewashed walls here.

The master double bedroom suite is spacious with a Juliette window, exposed beams and views over the Marseillan rooftops.

The ensuite shower is big enough for two to share.

The main bathroom is surprisingly large for an older house, and it boasts twin washbasins, a corner bath with shower above and a heated towel rail.

And in the newly refurbished ground floor living space, a shower room - so when using the optional 4th bedroom no need to climb to the top of the house.

There is a separate wc on the landing. The second bedroom has a double bed and original wooden beams.

And there is an electric velux window shutter to ward off the dawn after a late night toasting the stars of those Mediterranean summer nights.

The third room is ideal for the kids, and very versatile indeed.

A single bed in one corner and the coveted bunk beds to be argued over on the other side of the room.

Three bedrooms is perfect for most families, but, remember, the garden studio option means you've always the option of a full house at Le Jardin Secret. Ask us for our euro rates....
