"Come home to the old quarter, where the streets are named for love, liberty and gastronomy, and have a quiet evening in, curled up in a comfy chair with a good book."

In the historic centre of Marseillan, in a street just as wide as a whisper, in the hinterland of the church and market squares, discover our hidden haven of Les Papillons: a ground-floor retreat in a centuries-old family home where you may live the life of a true Marseillanais.

Cool and shaded from the summer sunshine, a warm and cosy nest in the winter, welcome to our one-bedroom hideaway in the heart of the oldest village in France, a perfect sanctuary from the bustle of terrace cafes and market stalls where you may stay in touch with the outside world with internet and TV.

Wake up under vintage beams in a bright and spacious double bedroom, step into the double-width walk-in shower and prepare the cafetière for your coffee and petit dejeuner in your own private apartment in the South of France.

Nip out to anyone one of three bakers within 100 yards of the front door for the morning croissants and baguette. Perhaps Eugène at the top of the street for artisanal loaves, maybe a walnut loaf from La Manne Dorée around the corner, or a buttery pain au chocolat from Lagarrigue next to the church.

With the morning paper from the Maison de la Presse, perhaps some fresh milk and fruit jams from the grocers at the corner, you are set for a lazy breakfast at the dining table in the main living/dining room.

Catch up on the television news headlines in French and English and check your emails with the free wifi throughout the apartment.

Tuesday is Market day, just around the corner, so find delicious olives, tapenades, fish, cheese and fresh fruit and veg from the stall holders: asparagus and cherries in Maytime, apricots and strawberries in June, ripe melons, succulent peaches and nectarines from local fields and orchards, and plump tomatoes and garlic all summer long.

The closest winery is the Domaine Carayon, around 200 yards away for picpoul and merlot wines by the litre or bottle.

The fridge and wine rack are waiting at home.

The compact kitchen at Les Papillons, with its original feature sink, has a two ring electric  hob, tabletop oven and a microwave for preparing something special for the evening.

And you’ll find freshly made paeilla, rotisserie chicken and mouth-watering far-eastern dishes from market traders if you’d rather spend your afternoon by the waterfront or on the beach instead of cooking.

No shortage of restaurants within a couple of minutes of the house, from the acclaimed gastronomic Table d’Emilie on the square to the informal pleasures of the Boulevard and Delicatessen.

Have a glass of the local Croix de Sud beer at a table outside the newly opened Marseillanerie by the church walls or catch up with the local news and sports over a pastis or demi-pression at the Marine Bar.

Or perhaps return home to the old quarter, where the streets are named for love, liberty and gastronomy, and have a quiet evening in, curl up in a wide armchair in the living room with a good book.

Les Papillons apartment is well quipped for a short break or long stay holiday. Radiators & fans. Washing machine, iron & ironing board and we can even provide an extra bed or child's cot on demand.

With Les Papillons tucked away so securely in the old village, it always comes as a delightful surprise to find the port, with its quayside tables and arriving barges and sailing boats so close to the picturesque centre. Just wander past the church and along by the theatre and boulodrome, and you find yourself in the harbour.

Another ten restaurants to choose from, five minutes from home. A mooch around the menu boards, the delicious indecision on the threshold of a memorable evening's food and wine; an afternoon coffee as you watch the Atouvents skippers setting sale for another odyssey on the lagoon; the salt and lemony tang of a plate of seafood being assembled at a terrace counter; home made icecream being scooped into cones on the other side of the water amid the clank of bottles in bags as visitors to the Noilly Prat vermouth distillery stop to admire the view of the last authentic port on the French Med.
