La Maison du Colonel

Spacious family home on the former ramparts

Belle Maison du Village spacieuse et lumineuse

4 bedrooms

(sleeps 8)

3 baths

In a village that shares its secrets, there is still one surprise to discover on the former ramparts. La Maison du Colonel sits in a modest row alongside its neighbours, but who would guess that so large a family home could be hidden behind the unassuming front door.

La Maison du Colonel actually straddles two streets in the historic centre, and four good sized bedrooms, three bath or shower rooms and separate large living dining and family rooms are here to be discovered.. as well as the extra surprise: a modest little terrace carved out of the roof where al fresco dining is summoned by the chime of the bell from the church tower, the belfry sentinel that keeps the secret of a hideaway amongst the terracotta tiles and old wooden beams.

Open the front door next to the garage.

Climb up the inviting and imaginatively lit staircase from street level to the very spacious and cool master bedroom suite.

A large double bed, bedside cabinets, a dressing table and good mirrors and wide windows to welcome the silver and gold sunrise of a Marseillan morning that spills its wake-up wamth to the polished floor . Plenty of walk-in wardrobe space and a superb ensuite bathroom, with a proper bathtub for the luxury of a lazy start and finish to every day. A haven for adults, since the children have their own space across the landing and down a few steps to the family room and beyond.

Here you will find the television, and hub for wifi internet connection, and beyond are two more bedrooms, and a family shower room and a separate wc. A brand new washing machine for laundry is also to be found here.

Some families like to use this level for teenagers or perhaps a second couple or family friends who might enjoy private space slightly apart from the rest of the house. Otherwise, this gives the youngsters a part of the house where they can be themselves, leaving the top floor for grown-up soirees.

The twin bedroom is ideal for children, as it has niches, cupboards and hideaway nooks – perfect for toys and clothes.

We can always arrange for a cot to be placed in the room, a high chair and child gate for the starcase are available as well.

Next door is another double bedroom, with ample cupboard and wardrobe space and bookshelves for choice bedtime reading.

Back on the main staircase, a few more steps to the top floor and the main living room and nicely equipped kitchen. Besides the stylish fridge, there is an oven, electric hob and microwave for preparing the meal and the latest Whirlpool dishwasher to make sure that clearing-up after dinner is never a chore.

The house is equipped with plenty of cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, plates, bowls and mugs and glasses whether you toast Le Colonel with the awarding winning Chardonnay from the winery around the corner, or the sparkle of fizz that you discover when you visit Limoux, where Languedoc has been producing bubbles since before Dom Perignon popped his first cork.

A huge L-shaped sofa for sprawling and other chairs well placed for settling down with a good holiday read, and a wood-burning stove in the very comfortable living room.

A fourth equally well- proportioned bedroom under the eaves, with a velux skylight window, has another double bed and its own en-suite shower and wc on this top floor.

Across the living area, step through the doorway by the stairs into a charming dining room. At its centre is a fine old table ready to treat you to some memorable meals. Not to mention some equally unforgettable wines. Eight guests may sit around the table in comfort, or the meal may spill out into the open air, since one wall peels away to open out into the semi-sheltered terrace.

Here as the beams and tiles of the roof gently give way to the clear blue skies of the South of France, another patio table can seat four, and a couple of loungers lay ready for those who want to take advantage of 300 days of sunshine. Let lunchtime linger into afternoon, and raise an aperitif to the setting sun in the western sky.

The compact terrace actually slips around the building with an extra hidden corner for a sunbed, or quiet escape to lose yourself in a good book away from the family, and the canny blend of open skies and sturdy shade mean that all the family may enjoy the same space, whether or not they are sunworshippers or inclined to gentle breezes away from the bright light.

With heaters ready for the winter and either fans or air-conditioning units in the summer, Le Colonel is a welcoming host whatever the season.

Around the house, discover other peoples’ private echoes of Marseillan’s present and past. The eclectic collection of paintings and artwork on the walls reflects varied tastes, moods and styles.

You may recognise some local scenes, capturing the essence of the village of fishermen and wine-makers, from the atelier studio of your neighbour Jean-Claude Chabrol just along the road from the house.

The churchtower, glimpsed from the terrace across a sea of mossed, bleached, burnished and weathered terracotta recalls the village’s ever exciting history.

Walk down the street from the house to decide whether to turn left at the crossroads and explore the port, succumb to the chars of a quayside café or set sail on the Etang itself, or turn right into the warren of centuries-old ruelles and passages in the quaint old town, where a hidden chateau or forgotten chapel may be behind the next cluster of geraniums of bougainvilla.

Stroll on to the Church Square renamed for a hero of the Resistance, through side streets still bearing their Occitan signs recalling the patois of generations past.

Buy your fish direct from the fishermen in the market hall, your meat from Monsieur Valette and decide for yourself whether you’ll choose a fresh baguette from LaGarrigue’s counter by the church, or an exotic loaf from Eugene behind the grocers.

Wherever your steps take you, you will be but a few minutes from a memorable meal, whether at any of a dozen or more restaurants or surrounded by family and friends, chez vous at the Maison du Colonel.
